Trek through cork oak forest to Oran's most spectacular panoramic viewpoint
The hike up Mount Murdjadjo is one of Oran's most rewarding outdoor experiences. The trail winds through the fragrant Murdjadjo Forest — a lush mix of cork oak, wild lavender and pine — before emerging dramatically at the Santa Cruz Fortress summit with breathtaking 360-degree views.
The main trail begins near the Télépherique (cable car) station in the city and climbs steadily for about 3km through the forest to the fortress. The path is well-marked and suitable for reasonably fit walkers. Total ascent is approximately 380 metres.
Start early to avoid the summer heat. Wear sturdy shoes and bring sunscreen. The trail is free and unsupervised — go at your own pace. The descent via cable car is a wonderful way to end the adventure.
